eHealth Technologies’ Automated Imaging Workflow Makes Interoperability Possible

Rochester, NY—November 19, 2019—Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) are leading the charge for interoperability by enabling participants to work together across organizational boundaries for the greater good of patients and communities. eHealth Technologies, the leader in image-enabling HIEs, is playing a major role in this endeavor with its newly-released solution that gives clinicians immediate and automatic access to prior medical images from across the community.

This groundbreaking new capability—eHealth Connect® Image Exchange Automated Imaging Workflow—automatically locates, retrieves, curates and delivers relevant medical images that reside in external facilities across the community into a local PACS or imaging system, prior to when they are needed for diagnosis or treatment. Launched this fall, this advancement is the first of its kind to make images available through an automated process that eliminates nearly all manual steps.

Patients often see multiple providers and specialists in several locations during the course of treatment. Medical images acquired and stored at those facilities are important to track disease progression and identify prior conditions that influence continuity of care. Hospitals and imaging service providers maintain staff who dedicate many hours a day locating, retrieving and importing these external prior medical images for scheduled patients. Even cloud-based image sharing services require manual effort from clinical staff to issue requests, respond to those requests, manually match patient identities, upload and then download imaging studies from the cloud.

Automated Imaging Workflow, whether implemented in an emergency care setting or to facilitate efficient and effective care delivery for complex conditions like cancer and heart disease, is a powerful tool to reduce gaps in care and create a more comprehensive medical record for patients.

“Automated Imaging Workflow is a technological development that offers an unprecedented benefit to its users,” says Gary Larson, executive vice president and general manager of HIE solutions for eHealth Technologies. “This new service creates a truly interoperable environment in a local, regional or state-wide setting, as acquiring relevant external prior medical images can be accomplished as a nearly-invisible background task, freeing caregivers to focus on patients.”

eHealth Technologies’ Automated Imaging Workflow is an extension of its existing services, eHealth Connect Image Exchange. The service provides seamless interoperability largely because it is an integral component of HIEs,

eHealth has integrated medical images from more than 100 hospitals and imaging centers with numerous EHR solutions as well as private, regional, and statewide HIEs across the US.
